Here´s how it works:

This strategy is normally used on the so called even money bets (ie red, black etc). The idea is to employ a positive progression method- what we mean by that, is that you increase your bets as you go if you lose, and cover any losses on the subsequent round.

Let´s take an example. Say we are betting a fiver on red. We lay the bet, the wheel spins and the ball lands on Red 32. All well and good. We are now £5 up. So we lay another bet of £5, this time on evens. The wheel spins............it comes up 5 red. Damn it, I hear you mutter.

Never mind, we are going to employ the Martingale. Hold on to your hats.
So, now we fancy black, seeing as red has come up twice. We bet £10 this time to cover the previous loss. The roullette wheel spins.........and spins........It comes up 36 red. What? I hear you say. It must be fixed (actually you often get a run of the same).

No worries. We are hanging on to our nerve. Now we bet £20, double again, and we go for black again.

The wheel spins. Hurrah! It comes up 33 black. We win £20, plus we get our £20 bet back and we do our sums.

Since we lost the 2nd bet, we laid down £35 and got back €40 from the table, so we are £5 up (£10 up including our first successful bet).

And that, in a nutshell, is the Martingale doubling up progression system.

Now you might be wondering: fantastic- seems like a blinder. How come the casinos haven´t gone out of business? Well, there´s a limitation to this system (well 2 actually).

The first is that most casinos have a 0 pocket on their roulette wheel (or 2 in American Roulette). This means that your odds on even money bets aren´t quite even- every now and then the ball is going to land in the zero pocket. (Always play American roulette by the way- the odds are better).

The second, is that all casinos run a table limit. This means that you cannot double up your bets to cover your losses indefinitely. At some stage you will reach the end of the line.

So should you use the Martingale? By all means, but understand its limitations. Keep your first bet low so you have a good margin for doubling up your bets and don´t chase your losses. If you have a successful sequence, cut and run!
